Clayanimation Movies Designed and Filmed by Second Graders with Music Composed by Third Graders
Miss Biank, Mrs Gruenwald, and Mrs. Innes, the music teacher, art teacher, and information specialist respectively, have recently completed a cross-curriculuar and cross-grade level clayanimation project. The first step of the project occurred in the art class where Mrs. Gruenewald taught the students about animals and they created an armature, which would become the skeleton, out of pipe cleaners. Clay was meticulously added by the second grade students to create the animals themselves. Students also designed habitats using boxes for the base and other household items such as fur, sequins, fabric, cardboard tubes, and many other materials which were donated by parents.
Once the animals and habitats were finished the filming began. The students moved their animals slowly in their environments while interacting with other animals. Mrs. Innes took each picture while the students created a story with their clay creatures. After the movies were completed they were sent to Ms. Biank in the computer lab. Each group of third graders received their own second grade movie. The third graders imported the movies into the Garageband program and began to compose the music to the movies. Ms. Biank asked the third graders to think about the mood of the movie and the third grade students tried to create music that matched the second grade movies.
The final product was a clayanimation movie designed and filmed by second-graders with music composed by the third graders with the collaboration of the music and art teachers, and information specialist.
There were several claymation projects where student full names were listed in the audio portion of the project. We strive to protect the identities of our students on the CCSD 46 website by not posting any student photographs or student last names. We apologize for omitting those presentations but thank you for your understanding of our internet safety policy.
